ÉCHIRÉ,
130 YEARS OF HISTORY
Let's travel through time to discover the fascinating history of Échiré churned butter
More than 130 years ago, the Marquis du Dresnay, residing at the Château de la Taillée in Échiré, embarked on the adventure of butter makingA few years later, his project came to fruition: the Laiterie d'Échiré was created, promoting the collection of milk from the surrounding area and continually improving its manufacturing process.
Faced with the growing enthusiasm and development of the dairy, the Marquis decided to transform it into a cooperative on April 15, 1894, thus giving birth to La Coopérative Laitière d'Échiré.
Aware that the quality of churned butter depends on the quality of the cows' feed, their breed and the environment, Mr. Sagot, owner of the butter factory at the time, set up regulations and specifications that the farmers would have to apply in order to be able to sell their milk to the Cooperative. Thanks to these requirements and the remarkable work of the farmers and master butter-makers, Échiré butter gained in renown, even reaching the Halles de Paris.
The beginning of recognition
In 1896 and 1899, Échiré won the bronze medal for Charente and Poitou butters at the Paris Agricultural Competition. In 1900, a decisive year for the cooperative, it won the gold medal at the general competition of the Charentes and Poitou Dairies in Paris and also won the grand prize of honor at the Paris World Fair.
Despite rising competition, Échiré maintains its position thanks to its kneading quality in barrel churns as well as its unparalleled shelf life. The butter of Excellence stands out once again by winning new competitions, including some in Normandy.
Our master butter-makers take great care at every stage of the manufacturing process, observing rigorous precautions to guarantee the exceptional quality of our butter, its unique hazelnut and creamy taste and its unctuous mouthfeel.
This rigor will lead to obtaining the Butter label
Charentes-Poitou PDO in 1996. For over 130 years, the exceptional know-how of our farmers and master butter-makers has kept the tradition of churned butter alive..
This is what has earned the Échiré butter brand such international recognition.
