ÉCHIRÉ,
130 YEARS OF HISTORY
Let's travel through time to discover the fascinating history of Échiré churned butter
Over 130 years ago, the Marquis du Dresnay, residing at Château de la Taillée in Échiré, embarked on the ambitious journey of butter makingA few years later, his vision took shape with the creation of the Échiré Dairy, which began sourcing milk from the surrounding farms and continuously refining its production process.
As enthusiasm grew and the dairy expanded, the Marquis transformed it into a cooperative on April 15, 1894, marking the official birth of the Échiré Dairy Cooperative
Understanding that the quality of churned butter is directly linked to the cows’ diet, breed, and environment, Mr. Sagot—then owner of the butter factory—introduced strict regulations and a detailed set of standards that farmers were required to follow in order to supply milk to the Cooperative. Thanks to these high standards and the remarkable work of local farmers and master butter-makers, Échiré Butter gained widespread acclaim, eventually reaching the renowned Halles de Paris.
The beginning of recognition
In 1896 and 1899, Échiré was awarded the bronze medal for Charentes and Poitou butters at the Paris Agricultural Competition. In 1900, a turning point for the cooperative, Echiré won the gold medal at the general competition of the Charentes and Poitou Dairies in Paris, as well as the Grand Prize of Honor at the Paris World Fair.
Despite growing competition, Échiré has maintained its prestige thanks to the exceptional kneading quality achieved in wooden barrel churns and its unmatched shelf stability. This butter of Excellence continues to stand out, winning new awards, including some in Normandy.
Every step of the production process is overseen with care by our master butter-makers, following precise guidelines to ensure an exceptional product: a delicate hazelnut and cream flavor, and a silky, melt-in-the-mouth texture.
This unwavering commitment led to the awarding of the Charentes-Poitou PDO label in XNUMX.
For over 1996 years, the exceptional know-how of our farmers and master butter-makers has kept the tradition of barrel- churned butter alive..
It is the legacy that has earned Échiré butter its international acclaim today.
